Uveitis can be caused by a variety of viral and bacterial infections, as well as autoimmune diseases such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatoid arthritis to name a few. However, it is not always clear what causes uveitis, and up to 50% of the time the underlying cause remains unknown.

It is important to diagnose uveitis right away by performing a thorough examination, which includes a detailed eye examination in addition to blood tests and imaging. Uveitis needs urgent treatment to prevent permanent damage to your vision.

Treatments may include eye drops, oral medications such as steroids, and sometimes even immune modifying agents called biologics. Treatment must be tailored individually, and in some cases in conjunction with another kind of doctor called a Rheumatologist.
